Title: Backwards compatible firmware update

Wolf-RS - July 2, 2009 07:23 AM (GMT)
It said that there will be a firmware update for the PS3 so it can be backwards compatible. Are you guys hyped to be able to play all of your PS2 games again?

I'd sell my PS2 now for the PS3.

EDIT: I just now thought of this, but what about Memory Cards? Will you have to start your games over?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the factor that prevented the PlayStation 3 from being completely backwards compatible a hardware one?

That's what I was thinking. They might as well do a re-call and modify all PS3s to have PS2 Memory Card Slots.

Or do something like they will with the PSPgo and offer to convert their game saves into something the PS3 can read.

Not necessarily only the lack of memory card slots, but the emotion chip which essentially allows the Playstation 3 to play Playstation 2 games. Sony had eliminated that from the design of the current models of the Playstation 3 to cut production costs.

Although, it seems that there are a few games that are still compatible through firmware updates like Wolfy said. Big name titles like Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and so forth. However, it doesn't seem to include all titles.

In short, I'd keep my PS2 if I were you.

Basically, this is nothing but a PS2 emulator for the PS3 <_<;;

If it's free, go for it.

It's pure speculation at this point as to whether or not it'll be included in a firmware update, or exclusively included in the later PS3 models.

There is no need for memory cards for both PS1 games and PS2 games. You can make a internal memory card for both consoles so that when you play the game it saves your file on the hard drive.

Right now this update is purely a rumor even though I would love it to be true. I just bought mine a few weeks ago and since it's 80gb it doesn't play PS2 games. I still have my PS2, though. ;D
