Title: New DS on the way.
Falco - September 28, 2008 06:04 PM (GMT)
Apparently Nintendo just can't stop making new versions of their handhelds, and the DS is no exception.
Announced recently is that Nintendo will release a new DS in Japan this year with a camera, SD card slot, and a unconfirmed two touch screens.
I find it kind of weird, is this stuff really needed?
Here's the link.

Thats cool you could listen to music and take pictures although I do think they should stop making New Ds'es its getting a little old now.
dragonfly - September 28, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
sounds to me like they may actually be trying to compete with the iPhone...
but ultimately, i really don't feel like the DS needs all that stuff. i mean, maybe i'd let the SD card slot slide, but really? music playback and a camera? seriously?
Double Oh Seven - September 28, 2008 06:35 PM (GMT)
I was just about to post this, here is another source:
http://kotaku.com/5055944/report-new-ninte...SC#viewcommentsNow, all you people saying "Another one? Why? They just want more money"
Well yes and no, but apple is doing the same thing with their iPods and no one is getting on their case. What are we on now? The 3rd gen of iPods? Not to mention the iPod Touch, and the iPhone.
This is only the third iteration of the DS. Seeing as how a year ago I lost my DS lite, this is the perfect opportunity for me to get a new DS, and now for this I wont need a PSP, so I can scratch that off my list.
But IGN is wrong, two touch screens? Unlikely. The most guaranteed additions are the MP3 player and the Camera. SD card slot is a given if there are the previous two. Although, the DS slot could just be used as a port for a Mini SD adapter card.
I dont doubt this is true, and I am happy that Nintendo keeps wanting to improve their product. Only time will tell. If you have been on the edge about getting a DS, wait out a little longer.

2 Touch screens + Normal Screen = Fail.
Unless, they make the top screen Touchable (Lolz.) Then I wouldn't mind. But having 3 screens would be too much. SD Cards, I wouldn't mind. Hell, I would never even use the slot, seeing as how I don't plan on ever using one for the Wii. MP3 player would say "Goodbye" to my need for an iPod. But... Looks to me that the DS has it's sights set on eliminating the PSP from mainstream. I mean, seriously. What's the only thing a PSP doesn't have then the "3rd Gen DS"? Camera. Unless PSP-3000 has Camera, sounds to me like PSP's screwed.
Look at this.
PSP:- MP3 Player Built-in
- Small Library of games when compared to DS.
- Photo Viewing Capabilities
- Internet.
- Wi-Fi (Haven't tested this.)
DS: - MP3 Player
- Huge Library of games
- Added Camera, Possible Photo Viewing Implied
- Internet Cartridge
- Wi-Fi (Quite honestly, I believe that this would be superior.)
So yeah, Looks like PSP needs more games and camera in order to compete with the DS.

But the DS doesn't need to compete with the PSP silly, it's competing with the IPhone now, and your summary of the PSP shows that you're a silleh fanboy.
PSP has a lot of good platformers and RPGs as well as MGS.
This new DS version seems rather pointless, and there's been no good games out for it recently or this year, apart from Kirby Port

You be dissin' Chrono Trigger, now?
Anyway, I don't like repeating what others have said so already in this thread, so I'll just leave it at this is the most intriguing product to be announced for a while, concerning Nintendo.
BoyChameleon - September 28, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
I've been able to do most of this with my DS for over a year now.
Wolf-RS - September 29, 2008 11:20 AM (GMT)
Rather strange they did not announce it at E3....
Anyway, I saw a game that will be made along with the development of this new DS. The game always you to take pictures of your face and lets you play around with it. In addition, I needed a new DS for about a year now. I was about to buy the lite until this showed up. So, I will wait alittle longer for this new DS.

Dudes, calm down. they said nikkei heard of it.
Nikkei was the same website who confirmed a portable gamecube was on the way, but that didn't happen either.
Either way, even if it IS true, it'll be a huge failure. -_-

Like, seriously, Nintendo needs to fucking drop our moms and sisters and get back to who really matters. US. The crazy nerds who go on forums and complain about how they should drop our parents/siblings. We're the people that put them into buisness, and we might still be here after they decide that gay games like Wii Fit aren't gonna keep us occupied like Mario and Zelda. More Starfox/Kirby/ect. ect. please.
Anyways, I agree. Although, I think I may have gotten back into Brawl, Pokemon, and Final Fantasy.

The DS already has a brilliant library of games. To sit down, and complain by merely saying "Moar, moar, moar!", is somewhat self-indulgent, don't you think?
I'm not even going to bother defending the Wii, however. That's an entirely different story.
Jiya - October 2, 2008 01:16 AM (GMT)
The only thing I find interesting about it is the SD Card slot, other then that the other features don't interest me. I am happy with the DS Lite I have unless this a whole new portable, if so, then I gonna have to buy it since the DS is the only thing I play the most other than my 360. My poor Wii is just collecting tons of dust :(

This is the thing that ticks me off though. They took out the GBA slot! I mean come on people! People still there GBA games time to time. Not only that I bought a DS lite maaybe a little less than a year ago. I wish nintendo would do somekind of trade in plan or something so I dont have to spend a good 250 dollars on this awesome DS.

Nintendo has hit rock bottom. -_-
Oh, well. Might as well save up for one, I need a digital camera/mp3 player anyway.
stienerperson - October 2, 2008 06:54 PM (GMT)
The DSi looks almost the exact same, and the only useful thing added on to it is the SD card slot. Warioware DS 2 looks nice though, as did Punch Out. Everything else was meh :/

Don't buy it, just think...do you really need a camera and web browser?
I got a DS lite two years ago, and it's bee doing fine for me.
BTW No GBA slot = fail.

We should all boycott Nintendo until they learn that we will not be won over with gimmiky stuff anymore. The Wii has worn out it's welcome until they can prove otherwise.
DS is heading into the same direction. Seriously, the only thing that they REALLY needed to add was an SD Slot. Anything other was bad. I can't say against MP3, but like, I can tell that this thing won't hold much. As for camera, that's why you get a phone with a not-so-bad camera. The camera on the DSi won't be very high-quality. Web Browser will, no doubt, be Opera, and we all know Opera sucks.
No GBA slot has finally sealed the deal. Nintendo as a whole is just f*cking retarded. They made epic fail with the Wii, and now they said "Hey guys, how can we make the DS fail a whole lot?"
I, for one, am keeping my DS lite. BTW, Mic on that thing just looks stupid.
EDIT: Wait, the actual mic is the little dot next to Iky's gaping vagina that giant hole in the center of the DS.
EDIT2:

having read more about it, i have to say, i kind of like the idea of downloadable content for the DS. that was one thing that always ticked me off. you turn on the DS and see a little button for "DS Download Play", but all you can really get, if you're not playing a game that allows for cardless download play, are short demos and movie previews for games. and those all disappear once you power off the DS. if nothing else, i assume the SD card slot will allow you to save any content you download to the system.
i dunno. now that i've looked more into it, i'm starting to have mixed feelings about it. i still don't see the need for the music player and the camera, though.

Lesse... Camera + Mp3 is on my cell phone which already has sd card. No gameboy slot = fail. But then again, that's what .rom's are for 8D.
This DSi smells of fail and sweat, mostly sweat fail. I think I'll just spend the $300 I just got on a DS lite + a bunch of games.

Alright guys, this crit-fest on Nintendo is a bit overexagerated. All you guys who are butthurt that you didn't get your new Zelda game at E3 need to give Nintendo a break.
The DSi is a solid piece of hardware in all respects. Better Wifi functionality, camera, better speakers and microphone, better internal design to make it more durable than the lite. You guys who are saying "yeah well I have a camera in my phone and I have an iPod" cosider this. Can you use your camera to interact with games? Can you integrate your music into the game to create new experiences and unlimited possibilities? No, so take a step back, and open up your mind to the benefits of hardware like the DSi instead of just the cynics view.
People who jump on the bandwagon without experiencing something for themselves and drawing their own conclusions based off of others cynical views will find life much more enjoyable if they draw their own conclusions and give things a chance.
Because lets face it, none of us have actually played the DSi, it could be alot of fun. Imagine playing a 3D chat game, voice chatting with your friend who lives miles away and sending pictures back and forth, maybe even playing a little bit of your favorite music in the background while you compete in various minigames.
And you know their are plenty more new features I haven't even scathed yet.
And the lack of GBA slot? You guys all have your GBA's still, I cant see what is the problem. Don't have one? You can spare 40$ for a new one. (If that)
So give it a chance, let us see what comes of it.
Thats my two cents.

I don't care what anyone says....
Mp3,Sd card slot, and camera on a handheld is a beast thing. I needed a new DS anyway so why buy this one? GBA? I can care less, I have a GBA and the orginal NDS so, I am fine for games that require GBA transfer. The new DS will have DS ware. HOW COOL IS THAT? DS demo channel will probably have better games along with it. This DS not only makes a better handheld but, expands the Wii gaming selection. Think about it...now you can play games that require a camera. Who is not to say that it can't record?

The thing is, we've seen Nintendo do this before. They release some product which everyone is really excited about, but they can't deliver with quality games to go with these products. Honesty, I don;t think they could do anything with a 1.3 megapixel camera to make a good, quality game. I would bet money that something along the lines of Brain Age would be the game they create.
It is all part of Nintendo's new marketing ploy. Forget the gamers who have served them for years, and release non-games that essentially cater to the elderly, women, and children. And it is working.
And what do you mean when you say "Can you integrate your music into the game to create new experiences and unlimited possibilities?" Endless possibilities? Really?

I mean really, I bet my new Ipod touch is better then this thing.
Plays videos, games are cheaper and download on the spot, It's web browser beats Opera any day, and it has youtube.
Now on to Camera.
Why would I want a camera to have "unlimited possibilities" when I have a phone with a Camera that kills this one.
Do I really want to take a picture of myself to put on some gimmicky game that people will buy just because of it?
Bottom end, this DS was something rushed which Nintendo put out there to sell Millions more, simply to probably make a next Gen model in a year or two.

Well, for 120$ more (and that is assuming you got the 8GB), I would
hope that the web browser, camera, etc. is better quality. If only for your sake.
I kind of doubt that your phone has a better camera than the DSi will. The best phones on the market right now are upwards of 2 megapixels if you want to spend less than 150$. The DSi's main camera is 3 Megapixels.
Unless, of course, you are talking about your iTouch's camera [if they even have one, I dont even know]. And in that case, refer to the above pictures once more. And you know what,
you might not want to take a picture of yourself or of something sweet you've seen in your earthly travels, but that doesn't mean no one else will, the world doesn't revolve around you Falco, your opinion is not law. God damn.
Your posts are only further proving my point of how cynical people got towards Nintendo because they didn't get what they wanted out of Nintendo for E3. You guys may not realize this, but the Big 3 dont really care about E3 anymore, why? Because it sucks. So naturally, they wouldn't waste resources or money on it when they can hold their own press conference, because lets face it, regardless of whether it is announced at E3, Leipzig, or a private conference, a new Zelda game etc. will be all over the damn internet the next day. So why waste money on a doomed convention?

That's a fairly shallow comparison, especially when considering Apple knows its way in and out of the portable multimedia market.
As for the butthurt of the lack of a GBA slot. Well, think about it. The newly granted magic they implemented in the form of an SD slot, can give way to ideas, and innovative methods to manipulate it in ways only the Homebrew community can. I.e GBA emulators, anyone?
I can't see myself going out of my way to get one the moment it reaches the North American market, but it's probably the most interesting thing Nintendo has done. Before, they strained their position throughout the past as bringing more innovative means of engaging in gameplay. However, this move can be interpreted as a challenge to the at large, portable media device market.
Or in other words, Nintendo be all movin' in Apple's turf, with their iPhone and all, you know what I'm sayin'?
The opening of the App Store can be heavily considered as Apple's entrance into the gaming market, in addition to their new approach on advertising the iPod Touch, as "The Funnest iPod Ever". After all, quoting this statistic from Steve Jobs himself, making $30 Billion profit in the first mere 30 days of its existence definitely screams out the words 'possible major competition' to Nintendo's ear.
Thus, they attempt to gain equal footing with Apple's rising giant, by expanding their leading portable monster in the multimedia category, which it has been criticized in the past for lacking greatly. Whether this will hurt, or help Nintendo in the long-run is mere speculation at this point of time.
More or less, I'm agreeing Dubloh's point of the cynical point of view people have been having lately. People have complained in the past, saying that the DS lacks any interesting features that could set it apart from the PSP, multimedia wise. However, now when Nintendo makes their move, they get nothing but backlash from their so-called "loyal community".

Now let's get this straight. What was the point of an ipod touch? To do the same things as a normal MP3 but with internet? And touch? Obviously, when you look for the faults, you will find the faults. Look at the DS in a positive way. The first handheld with a built in camera. Has bigger screens then the last one. Has a bigger library for games and much, much more. Think about it, DS is a gaming system...Ipod touch was meant for everyday life. If DS was meant for only GAMING and Ipod touch was meant for EVERYDAY life, of course the ipod touch wins. But, at the price Nintendo is sellling it, with its features, it is not bad at all. DS's features were only for gaming purposes. You looking at it as if you were going to use the fearues 24/7. I bet you don't even us your ipod touch's features as much.
Get your facts straight. And stop this flam or this topic will be closed.
007, you are right.

Uh, the iPod Touch in terms of gaming, is nearly as revolutionary and innovative as the very opportunities the DS has brought to the gaming market. It possesses the multi-touch functionality much like the DS, in addition to its accelerometer, giving it tilt-sensibility, per se. Not only that, but its processors completely out match the PSP.
Apple's App Store opens up to allow software developed by amateur programming groups. Of course, with regulation, but it's much less limited compared to the gaming market we know. Not exclusive to amateur developers, but many hit titles and franchises, like Crash Bandicoot, Super Monkey Ball, and Need for Speed have made their way onto the iPod Touch.
Now, the App Store is not only limited to game related apps, but much much more.

Really? |
There are over 100 great DS games out there, lets broaden our views a bit, I mean hell a good game without the words Mario or Zelda in it? Damn that's a stretch.

| I kind of doubt that your phone has a better camera than the DSi will. The best phones on the market right now are upwards of 2 megapixels if you want to spend less than 150$. The DSi's main camera is 3 Megapixels. |
As for the rumoured additions, both have proven to be correct, with "audio enhancements" made to the handheld, while it will also now include a .3 megapixel (640x480) camera
